With Armies' 164-minute cut, indulgence remains the driving force, extra snippets far outnumber full scenes, and bloodshed - of the distracting, detached-from-the-series R-rated variety no less - is really the only addition of note. The extended cuts of An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and now The Battle of the Five Armies take three bloated, over-stuffed movies and make them even fatter. The opposite has proved true of The Hobbit trilogy, though.
